Tips for Travelling with your Montague
Many Montague customers take advantage of the portable nature of their bike by travelling locally and overseas. Because of the nature of different public transport rules and commercial airline travel, we’ve put together some tips…
When transporting your folded bike
For train, bus, tram, car or boat: Check with your State or City transport services to find out about travelling with folding bikes on trains, buses or ferries. Many cities allow free travel with folding bikes up to a certain size, while others do not apply a size limit, and still others require an extra ticket. If your bike is folded into its bag then carrying baggage onto your chosen transport may not be such an issue. All the same, we suggest becoming familiar with your local requirements.
We recommend you use a Montague Softcase for your folded bike as it allows you to separate the front wheel from the folded frame in the bag. This protects components from rubbing together and makes it easier to carry.
For commercial air flights:Use a hard suitcase or custom bike hard case with padding and pockets to separate the front wheel from the folded frame in the bag. This prevents damage in transit from baggage handling.
If you use the soft case, we suggest a number of things to prepare for commercial check-in and flying.
1. Wrap the derailleur area with foam or cloth OR remove the derailleur and pack safely into luggage. Either of these options will protect the derailleur from damage through poor airport baggage handling.
2. Check the bike in at the Oversize Luggage Counter. Although it will be bagged and normal check-in is possible, we recommend labelling the bag as a bike and applying Fragile tape or labels. By using the special counters available you can ensure your bike is handled with more care than usual.
