This bike is comfortable, practical and has features that allow a lot of flexibility and opportunity for different types of uses.
I am not a bike expert and do not have a great deal of knowledge of bikes and components but I have used bikes all my life and enjoy using them for fun, fitness and getting around.
I came across the paratrooper on the net while looking for folding bikes. I was looking for a bike that could be transported on public transport to travel interstate and that would also be easy to travel with in a car. There are so many bikes and options, a lot of smaller wheeled foldups seemed ideal for travelling but I was uncertain that they would give me the flexibility of riding off road and also loading the bike with gear when I go to work.
So I was looking for a bike that folded, that could be used around the city with options of carrying quite a bit of gear, that I could ride around for fitness and recreation in national parks and some off road tracks and trails.
I was also interested in the bike as a complete car replacement hoping that I could do some longer touring later using panniers or a trailer.
At the moment I have ridden around 500ks on bike paths, city roads and some dirt road and bush tracks. I have used a rear rack and two panniers with another 14kgs on the rack. I have travelled interstate with the bike folded up in a car packed in the bike bag.
I find the bike very comfortable it’s very easy to fold, and friends who have seen the bike have been impressed with the look of the bike and the folding mechanism.
I think the bike is worth buying just for the folding option. It seems strong and sturdy and I have no doubt it will be as useful and better than my previous mountain bikes.
The option of upgrading with universal components is another good feature.
This is the first bike I have used with disc brakes and there have been some issues, they seemed to take a long time to bed in and needed some adjustment. As I use the bike more and gain more experience and knowledge I may make a few changes with components depending on my needs and riding focus.
Early days at the moment but I would definitely recommend the bike to anyone who is looking for one bike that does a lot, its pretty smart and after the initial tuning it has been lots of fun to use. I work as a concert pianist mainly at the community level and so far it has been great to carry my piano stool, clothes and music gear. It’s a good bike to ride to work and or utilize on metropolitan trains.
There are better bikes available for city commuting – some of the other Montague models also interest me and there are specific options for touring and mountain biking.
However instead of two or three bikes I am hoping the paratrooper can cover adequately all of my needs. It only takes a few seconds to fold the bike, the bag is a great addition and worthwhile purchasing, the service, delivery time and communication and support from Montague Australia has been excellent. They have responded quickly to my queries and have provided some extra advice and info when requested.
All prices are in AUD.
